After months here you still haven't adjusted to how warm it stays at night: chilled by the AC, you step out onto the balcony, as uncomfortable outside as you were indoors. Your parents are out tonight and the whole house is dark. The pool at the club next door casts rippling reflections over you as you light a cigarette. There's a single swimmer doing lengths, back and forth, alone. Once in a while a bat streaks over the surface of the water. All around you, deep and loud, the trees are hissing.
